Biography

French theatre director and artist, working on both dramatic productions and opera. In 1980, he became the founder and one of the principal directors (together with Agathe Mélinand) of the theatre company Le Pélikan. In 1994, he was invited as a director to the Centre Dramatique des Alpes in Grenoble, and from 1997 to 2007 he was its director. From 2008 to 2018, he directed the Théâtre National de Toulouse, also together with Agathe Mélinand. 

One of the most sought-after French directors, he works in the largest theatres in Europe and America. As a rule, he also serves as costume designer for his productions, and sometimes as set designer as well. Among his recent projects are Rossini's 'La Cenerentola' at the Dutch National Opera, Offenbach's 'Le voyage dans la lune' at the Opéra-Comique, Offenbach's 'Barbe-bleue' at the Opéra de Lyon, 'Falstaff' at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Bernstein's 'Candide' at the Santa Fe Opera, and 'Lucia di Lammermoor' at the Opera Philadelphia and the Vienna State Opera.
